Horseshoe Lake in Jasper National Park

Heading north on the Icefields Parkway between Athabaska Falls and the Jasper townsite we pulled into a small parking area on the right. A couple of truckloads of young people suggested that we hike into the lake for a swim or just a look. I didn’t see a sign for the name of the lake and the trail was not marked but we took their advice – because THEY had been swimming there.  I’ve not been able to find the name of the lake on Google Maps or the Jasper National Park brochure I brought home. However, a thoughtful reader – see the comment below – named it as Horseshoe Lake. And if you Google that, the pictures people have posted match the sights we saw.

O Canada, where pines and maples grow.

PS. We didn’t swim.

  1. That looks like Horseshoe lake, which is just north of Athabasca falls. Such a beautiful place to stop and explore the shoreline. I’ve heard lots of people swim here as well, but have only been there in the spring so weren’t going to try it out either. Great place for taking photos though!

Thanks for the information! If it was shaped like a horseshoe, I certainly didn’t see the whole lake. I Googled it and pictures posted by others certainly look like where I was. I don’t think the young folks we saw had actually been swimming; more like partying, as it was the second week of May!

  2. It’s beautiful what ever its name is!

  3. Outstanding photos!
I need to visit Jasper National Park. It’s beautiful.

All of the National Parks in the Rockies are beautiful: Banff, Jasper and the oft’ overlooked Yoho.It would be nice to be there at different times of the year, too.

  4. Wonderful photos .. What a beautiful place!
