Athabaska Falls 1

About 25 km further north on the Icefields Parkway than Sunwapta Falls tumbles Athabaska Falls.

From the parking area, at river level, all you can see is a rapids.  And on the other side some concrete enclosures which give tourists (and photographers) a closer look at the top of the falls.  We got over to the other side – eventually – where there were warning signs everywhere not to try anything silly. Unfortunately someone wins a Darwin Award here nearly every year.

The two shots below were from an overpass over the Falls farther downstream, but it was really hard to get a view that allowed you to appreciate how deep the falls are.  Some of the shots in future posts will make the height clearer and more impressive.

Thanks for reading my post as well as looking at the pictures! While one feels sorry for the families it proves – as someone said – that common sense is not so common.

  2. It’s so Canadian to me…I can hear the falls….

  3. Those falls are amazing! Wonderful .. Thanks for sharing
