About 25 km further north on the Icefields Parkway than Sunwapta Falls tumbles Athabaska Falls.
From the parking area, at river level, all you can see is a rapids. And on the other side some concrete enclosures which give tourists (and photographers) a closer look at the top of the falls. We got over to the other side – eventually – where there were warning signs everywhere not to try anything silly. Unfortunately someone wins a Darwin Award here nearly every year.
The two shots below were from an overpass over the Falls farther downstream, but it was really hard to get a view that allowed you to appreciate how deep the falls are. Some of the shots in future posts will make the height clearer and more impressive.
